On this website, use of the word “jhana” pertains only to the samatha jhanas (the concentration meditation states) unless specified otherwise. The samatha jhanas are states of absorption in an object.
The states are recognized by the presence of the jhana factors. These are:
- One-pointedness: the mind is fixed only upon the object and no other thoughts arise (ekaggata).
- Intense pleasure or rapture (piti).
- Deep happiness or bliss (sukkha).
- Imperturbable equanimity (upekkha).
