Happiness is a choice. Nothing else.
Here's why people do not choose happiness:
It's a social conditioned response to the environment.
People around you are not happy. If you show signs of happiness people start asking you "what are you crazy? Why are you smiling all the time?".
You do not want to stand out from the crowd. You are afraid of social ostracism and death.
You choose to show signs of being content, never happy. Happiness is dangerous!
That's why we aren't happy all the time. Because of the expectations of other people.
I think everyone knows how to make themselves happy but nobody does it because of fear of what other people would think.
For example: polygamy would make us happy but that is not the socially accepted way of living.
Eating ice-cream all the time would make us happy but being fat is not promoted and accepted socially.
Having a low income, stress free job would make us happy but it is not socially accepted.
